Belgium Overview

Think of Belgium and it’s Bruges, beer and chocolate that generally spring to mind. Surprisingly little else is commonly known about this often-embattled country which gave rise to Western Europe’s first great towns, and whose early artists are credited with inventing oil painting. Perhaps it’s a lack of fervent nationalism – the result of many dominant cultures integrating here over the centuries – which has kept Belgium’s spotlight dim on the European stage. Rarely boastful, the country has in fact plenty to fascinate the visitor – from historically rich towns to the serenity of the hilly Ardennes, and everywhere wonderful bars and cafes where Belgians feel at home.
